WA 100 Points
“Scarecrow’s inky/purple-colored 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is a prodigious effort. It reveals a liqueur of crushed rocks intermixed with a smorgasbord of spring flower, blueberry, creme de cassis, and assorted blue, black, and red fruit characteristics. It also possesses extraordinary concentration, but what sets it apart is the fragrant aromatics combined with uncommon purity and elegance for such a full-bodied, massively concentrated wine. Its perfect balance suggests it can be drunk at a relatively young age, but it should easily evolve over 30-35 years. Congratulations to all involved!”

1999 Chateau Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin

Another fine Chateauneuf du Pape that is cellar quality and not as easy to find. This is partly because it is only made in certain years, more specifically 1989, 1990, 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2005. Hommage a Jacques Perrin is comprised mostly of old vine Mourvedre. This is really a wine to age and more enjoyable later in its life.

$290 LIMITED

Wine Advocate 96 (review from 2003)
“The recently released 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is closed and less expressive than the 2000, and perhaps more elegant and less weighty. Nevertheless, it is an enormously endowed effort revealing notes of licorice, blackberry and cherry fruit, melted asphalt, tapenade, truffles, and smoke. Chewy, with more minerality than most vintages of this wine possess, it requires a minimum of 6-8 years of cellaring. It should last 35-40 years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2035.”

2000 Henri Bonneau Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Celestins

Legendary is probably the easiest way to describe the winery. The wines spend their fermentation in cement and then are aged in old Burgundy barrels for years (those barrels are at least ten years of age). Current releases are usually 3-5 years behind other producers. Low yields, later harvests, and mostly Grenache. Always limited and always desired.

Wine Advocate 94 “The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Celestins has notes of sweaty saddle leather, roasted meats, dried Provencal herbs, and plenty of kirsch and black currant. Big and fleshy, with a hint of balsamic vinegar, and oodles of complexity and richness, it is no doubt controversial because it is so extreme in its aromas and flavors. But I love it. While I don’t think it’s one of Bonneau’s most noteworthy achievements, it is certainly a powerful 2000 that will evolve for another 15-20 years.”

2005 Eyrie Pinot Noir Reserve

2005 Eyrie Pinot Noir Reserve
Order now just released
Bottle Special $55 (Regular list $60)
6-pack $312 ($52 a bottle)
Case $600 ($50)

This obviously has to be one of the most anticipated releases of the year, even with the hype around the 2008 vintage. Eyrie reserve wines are known for being extremely long lived and the 2005 release will not disappoint. The wine was held back an additional year while we sold through the 2006 Reserve, integrating and improving for its long awaited release. This shows unreal depth giving way to raspberry with a touch of dried red fruit, light earthy notes (kind of cedar like), but vibrant in mouth (very good acidity, more than I remember when first having 2005s on release). It really seemed to be more finesse-like for a 2005 Pinot Noir than others did on release. Very pretty and a delight to drink. Have it now or revisit in 10 years.

2007 Kapcsandy Cabernet Sauvignon State Lane

400 case rarity with only 2 bottles available. A Robert Parker 100 point wine. Perfect for your cellar or a gift for the person who wants the greatest. $280 Net

Wine Advocate 100 points “Absolutely riveting, and even better than I predicted last year is the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon - Grand Vin State Lane Vineyard. Made from 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, and the rest tiny dollops of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot (400 cases produced), in two weeks of tastings, this wine stood out as one of those singular efforts that it is impossible to get out of your mind and off of your palate. A flawless, seamless, profound example of Napa Cabernet, it exhibits an opaque purple color along with a gorgeous perfume of lead pencil shavings, cedar, creme de cassis, ink, flowers, and espresso roast. With phenomenal depth, a multidimensional personality, unbelievable length, and an impeccable integration of all its component parts, this stunning wine lasts and lasts, with a finish approaching a full minute. Give this profound wine 3-5 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 25-30 years.”

1998 Roagna Crichet Paje $75

Was $105+
Now $75 (net)
It is hard to believe that a highly collectable and ageable wine would go on sale. The distributor dropped the price on this beauty, which mean I pass on the savings. I think that we have learned over the years that 1998 produced some very ageworthy wines. This in tandem with the ageability of Roagna’s wines makes this an easy pick for the cellar. Though the wine has reached the driking stage it still has 15+ years of life left. Short story on the wine: 55+ year old vines, skin maceration of at least 80 days, at least 8 years in barrel, and then 2 in bottle before release.

Wine Advocate 93 “The 1998 Barbaresco Crichet Paje is the estate’s top bottling from its home vineyard and this selection does not disappoint. It is an awesome effort, revealing a dark violet color and heady notes of menthol, minerals, black cherries, chocolate and cocoa along with masses of dark fruit that coat the palate with notable intensity as well as precision. This big, weighty Barbaresco is seriously in need of additional bottle age and should drink well to at least age 25. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2028.”

2007 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon

You cannot say enough about the Quilceda Creek wines. Though maybe I shouldn’t say anything since there are such a limited number of bottles that go to retail. The easiest way to think about this wine is that 2007 was a perfect season for Washington wines and if there has ever been a 100 point wine, this has to be one. Your only problem is that when the score is released the wine is gone. Past releases have scored well; 2001 98 points, 2002 100 points, 2003 100 points, 2004 99 points, 2005 100 points, 2006 99 points, 2007…

Wine Advocate (94-96): “The 2008 Not Yet Named White Wine, largely from the 11 Confessions Vineyard, is a blend of two-thirds Roussanne and one-third Viognier. It comes across like a great white Hermitage combined with an Alsatian grand cru. Beautiful notes of honeysuckle, peaches, lychee nuts, and spring flowers are followed by a full-bodied, but light, vibrant white wine boasting stunning concentration and richness. While it is slightly lower in alcohol than its 2007 sibling, both are high octane wines with more than 15% alcohol. The beautiful 2008 is the first vintage in which Krankl was able to employ his new concrete eggs (for about one-fourth of this cuvee).”

Robert Parker scored the wine a (94-96+)

“The 2007 Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape should ultimately eclipse the 2005 and 1998. It appears to be one of the finest wines made by Daniel Brunier and his brother. Its deep ruby color is accompanied by a superb nose of nori seaweed wrappers, licorice, pepper, tobacco leaf, and gobs of sweet black cherry and black currant fruit. Full-bodied with a fabulous texture, purity, and freshness (a consistent hallmark of this vintage), a juicy, rich, layered mouthfeel, and a finish that lasts for 45+ seconds. Although young, the tannin, acidity, and alcohol are all well-integrated. Typically, this wine tends to be dormant for 3-5 years after bottling, then emerge brilliantly. Therefore, I would wait until 2012 before pulling a cork on this one. Drink it over the following 20-25 years.”

The regular retail of the wine will probably be about $80 a bottle.  Saying that, I of course won’t be carrying a lot of the wine and want to make sure that if you want any of the wine that I can give you the best price.

1-5 bottles $70 a piece

6-9 bottles $66 a piece

10-12 bottles $62 a piece

1.5L (Magnum) $150

If you have interest in half bottles, 3.0L or larger let me know and I can work out those prices.  Those are much more limited and I might not be able to get the really large bottles.
