Garrisons Wine Journal

Garrison's Fine Wines has a Wine Journal to introduce new wines and releases, along with acknowledging the arrival of rare and allocated wines to the shop. Over time this will be an area to visit to find out about new wines, very limited wines, and some wines that never will reach the shelf. Past wines from the newsletter have included Cayuse, Clos Des Papes, and some other future offerings. Through the year many new wines will arrive at the shop, while only certain wines will be highlighted in the Wine Journal. These wines should be of greater interest and will be more limited in supply. Whenever a wine is highlighted here that you desire, please do not hesitate to contact the store for availability.

You might have heard of Chinato before, but did you know that Cappellano is credited with the creation of this wine? It is an infusion of Barolo with Quinine bark and other spices. The recipe dates back to the late 1800s and is passed down from father to son. The current holder of the recipe is Augusto Cappellano.

2008 Beaux Freres Pinot Noir Upper Terrace

2008 Beaux Freres Pinot Noir Upper Terrace
Just released…Pricing of $81 a bottle versus winery price of $90. If you are interested in 6-packs or cases of this wine, please call or email for special pricing. This is always my favorite cuvee of the lineup.

Winery Tasting Note: Beaux Frères vineyard despite an essentially identical upbringing in the vineyard and the cellar. True to our expectations the Upper Terrace shows a striking difference in personality and demeanor from the Beaux Frères. The color is a healthy dark plum to ruby purple. It is very Côtes du Nuits-like with its blue-black fruit and the underlying forest floor and floral character. Drink through 2025”

2008 Oregon Pinot Noir

2007 Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon

For those looking for the collectible, there cannot be a more desired or cultish wine than Scarecrow. The latest release from 2007 reached the highest marks, recieving a perfect 100 point score from the imfamous Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate. Only available in OWC of 3 bottles. Price: $1,440.00

WA 100 Points
“Scarecrow’s inky/purple-colored 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is a prodigious effort. It reveals a liqueur of crushed rocks intermixed with a smorgasbord of spring flower, blueberry, creme de cassis, and assorted blue, black, and red fruit characteristics. It also possesses extraordinary concentration, but what sets it apart is the fragrant aromatics combined with uncommon purity and elegance for such a full-bodied, massively concentrated wine. Its perfect balance suggests it can be drunk at a relatively young age, but it should easily evolve over 30-35 years. Congratulations to all involved!”

Owner’s Picks
August 27th 5-8 pm
$15

I figure a great way to round out the month is to have an Owner’s Pick tasting. This is a great chance for me to pick out a series of wines that I have tried, that I have enjoyed, but haven’t fit into a tasting theme yet. The flight is awesome. Starting with a sparkler from the Loire Valley, a white Chateauneuf du Pape, then an awesome Oregon Syrah made from my favorite California vineyard, a special Brunello deal, and then end with a red/pinkish sparkling wine from Italy.

The Wines of Sicily $18

August 20, 2010

The Wines of Sicily
August 20th 5-9 pm
$18 for six wines

First remember that the great thing about focused tastings is that it is a great opportunity to try wines you haven’t had, aren’t used to, and to educate your palate. This week we will focus on Sicily. It is the long lost cousin of Italy and though closer to Africa, the wine making traditions are century old. On this day we will highlight whites, reds, blends, single varietals, compare wine making styles (tank versus amphora), among other things.

2005 Gulfi di Vito Catania Nero d’Avola Nerosanlore
WA 95 Points “Everything comes together in spectacular style in the 2005 Nerosanlore, Gulfi’s most extravagant Nero d’Avola. This is another large-scaled offering, yet all of the elements of a great wine are present. Beautifully delineated aromatics meld into deep layers of dark fruit, violets, chocolate, spices and minerals. A gorgeous, seamless wine, the Nerosanlore boasts sensational purity in an utterly compelling style. It is not to be missed. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022.”

1999 Chateau Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin

Another fine Chateauneuf du Pape that is cellar quality and not as easy to find. This is partly because it is only made in certain years, more specifically 1989, 1990, 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2005. Hommage a Jacques Perrin is comprised mostly of old vine Mourvedre. This is really a wine to age and more enjoyable later in its life.

$290 LIMITED

Wine Advocate 96 (review from 2003)
“The recently released 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is closed and less expressive than the 2000, and perhaps more elegant and less weighty. Nevertheless, it is an enormously endowed effort revealing notes of licorice, blackberry and cherry fruit, melted asphalt, tapenade, truffles, and smoke. Chewy, with more minerality than most vintages of this wine possess, it requires a minimum of 6-8 years of cellaring. It should last 35-40 years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2035.”
